Ever wondered what it takes to get your morning cup of coffee? Behind every sip is a fascinating journey—one that starts in remote farms and ends in your favourite mug. Let’s trace the path of a coffee bean, from the farm to your cup!

1. Cultivation – Where Coffee Begins

Coffee grows in the Bean Belt, a region between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, where countries like Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Rwanda produce some of the world’s finest beans. Farmers carefully cultivate coffee trees, typically of the Arabica or Robusta variety, ensuring the right altitude, soil, and climate for the best flavour.

🌱 Timeframe: It takes 3-4 years for a coffee plant to produce its first cherries!

2. Harvesting – Picking the Perfect Cherries

Once ripe, coffee cherries turn red or yellow, signalling they’re ready to be picked. In many regions, farmers handpick the cherries to ensure only the best ones make it through. Some farms use mechanical harvesters, but handpicking remains the gold standard for quality.

📅 Timeframe: Harvesting typically happens once a year, though some regions have multiple harvests.

3. Processing – Turning Cherries into Beans

After harvesting, coffee cherries undergo one of three processing methods:

  • Washed (or Wet) Process – Cherries are pulped, fermented, and washed to remove the outer layers, highlighting bright and clean flavours.
  • Natural (or Dry) Process – Cherries dry in the sun with the fruit intact, producing sweeter, fruitier notes.
  • Honey Process – A mix of both methods, leaving some fruit on the beans for added complexity.

🛠 Timeframe: Processing takes days to weeks, depending on the method and weather conditions.

4. Drying & Milling – Preparing for Export

After processing, beans must be dried to around 10-12% moisture content. Farmers spread them on patios or raised beds, ensuring even drying. Once dried, the beans (called "parchment coffee") go through milling, where the outer layers are removed, and the beans are graded by size, weight, and quality.

🏗 Timeframe: Drying can take 1-3 weeks.

5. Exporting & Roasting – The Transformation Begins

The best beans are bagged and shipped worldwide. Once they reach roasters, they undergo roasting, where heat develops their final flavours. Light roasts retain bright acidity, medium roasts offer balance, and dark roasts bring out deep, bold notes.

🔥 Timeframe: Roasting takes 10-15 minutes at temperatures up to 500°F (260°C).

6. Grinding & Brewing – The Final Step

Freshly roasted beans are ground to different levels depending on the brew method:

  • Coarse – Perfect for French press.
  • Medium – Ideal for drip coffee or pour-overs.
  • Fine – Best for espresso.
