Making the perfect cappuccino requires a well-balanced combination of espresso, steamed milk, and foam. Here’s a guide on how to create a delicious cappuccino using various coffee equipment like a French press, Chemex, coffee machine, and more.

1. Using a Coffee Machine (Espresso Machine)

Ingredients:

  • 18-20g of espresso coffee beans (freshly ground)
  • 100-150ml of milk (for steaming)

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Espresso:

    • Fill the portafilter with freshly ground coffee and tamp it down evenly.
    • Brew a double shot of espresso (about 60ml) using your coffee machine.
  2. Steam the Milk:

    • Pour 100-150ml of cold milk into a steam pitcher.
    • Insert the steam wand just below the surface of the milk and turn it on.
    • Froth the milk until it reaches about 60°C and creates a dense, velvety foam (the foam should be about 1-2cm thick).
  3. Combine:

    • Pour the espresso into your cup.
    • Gently pour the steamed milk over the espresso, allowing the foam to settle on top to create the signature cappuccino texture.

2. Using a French Press

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee
  • 100-150ml of milk
  • Hot water (not boiling)

Steps:

  1. Brew the Coffee:

    • Add the coffee grounds to your French press and pour hot water (just off the boil) over the grounds.
    • Stir gently, then let it steep for about 4 minutes.
    • Press down the plunger slowly to separate the coffee grounds from the brewed coffee.
  2. Froth the Milk:

    • Heat the milk either on the stovetop or in the microwave, then froth it using a manual frother or by shaking it in a jar (make sure the lid is on tightly).
    • Froth until the milk is creamy with a thick foam layer.
  3. Combine:

    • Pour the freshly brewed French press coffee into your cup.
    • Add the frothed milk and foam, creating the perfect cappuccino balance of espresso and foam.

3. Using a Chemex

Ingredients:

  • 20g of medium-ground coffee
  • 100-150ml of milk
  • Hot water (just off the boil)

Steps:

  1. Brew the Coffee:

    • Place a paper filter in the Chemex and rinse it with hot water.
    • Add the ground coffee to the filter and slowly pour hot water over it in a circular motion, wetting the grounds evenly.
    • Let the coffee bloom for 30 seconds, then continue pouring water in a slow, steady stream until you have brewed about 200ml of coffee.
  2. Steam the Milk:

    • Heat the milk to about 60°C, then froth it with a manual frother or in a jar until it has a creamy texture with microfoam.
  3. Combine:

    • Pour the brewed Chemex coffee into your cup.
    • Add the steamed milk with foam on top to achieve the perfect cappuccino texture.

4. Using a Manual Milk Frother or Aeroccino (For Steaming Milk)

If you don’t have an espresso machine, a manual milk frother or Aeroccino frother can help you make a great cappuccino.

Steps:

  1. Brew your coffee using your preferred method—French press, Chemex, or pour-over (following the steps above).
  2. While your coffee brews, steam the milk with your frother or Aeroccino. Heat it gently (aiming for around 60°C) and froth it until it's creamy with a thick foam.
  3. Pour the brewed coffee into a cup and top with the steamed milk and foam for a perfect cappuccino.

Key Tips for a Perfect Cappuccino:

  • Espresso is Key: The foundation of a cappuccino is a strong, bold espresso shot. If you don’t have an espresso machine, use a strong brewed coffee to replicate the espresso base.
  • Milk Texture: The steamed milk should have a dense, velvety texture with a thick foam layer. This is what differentiates a cappuccino from a latte, which has more milk and less foam.
  • Proportions: A classic cappuccino is made with 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foam. The foam should sit on top of the drink in a thick layer.
  • Foam Quality: Good cappuccino foam should be dense, creamy, and able to hold its shape. It’s the thick foam that gives cappuccino its signature texture.

With these methods, you can make a rich and creamy cappuccino at home using different types of equipment, whether you have an espresso machine or use simpler tools like a French press or Chemex.
