How to Make the Perfect Latte with Different Equipment

Making the perfect latte requires good-quality espresso, steamed milk, and an understanding of how to use different coffee equipment. Here’s a guide on how to make a latte using a French press, Chemex, coffee machine, and other equipment:

1. Using a Coffee Machine (Espresso Machine)

Ingredients:

  • 18-20g of espresso coffee beans (freshly ground)
  • 150-200ml of milk (depending on the size of your latte)

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Espresso:
    • Place the portafilter on the coffee machine and fill it with the freshly ground espresso.
    • Tamp the grounds firmly to ensure even extraction.
    • Brew the espresso shot (about 30ml for a single shot or 60ml for a double shot).
  2. Steam the Milk:
    • Pour cold milk into a steam pitcher (about 150-200ml for a latte).
    • Insert the steam wand just below the surface of the milk and turn on the steam.
    • Froth the milk until it's velvety and smooth, with microfoam (steamed milk should reach about 60°C).
  3. Combine:
    • Pour the brewed espresso into your cup.
    • Gently pour the steamed milk over the espresso at an angle, creating a smooth mix with a little foam on top.
    • Optional: Use a spoon to create latte art with the foam.

2. Using a French Press

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee beans
  • 150-200ml of milk
  • Hot water (not boiling)

Steps:

  1. Brew the Coffee:
    • Add the coffee grounds to your French press and pour hot water (just off the boil) over it.
    • Stir gently, then place the lid on and let it steep for about 4 minutes.
    • Press the plunger down slowly to separate the grounds from the brewed coffee.
  2. Steam the Milk:
    • You can heat the milk using a stovetop or microwave and froth it using a milk frother or whisk until it’s smooth and velvety.
  3. Combine:
    • Pour the freshly brewed French press coffee into your cup.
    • Add the steamed milk, pouring gently to combine, and top with foam.

3. Using a Chemex

Ingredients:

  • 20g of medium-ground coffee beans
  • 150-200ml of milk
  • Hot water (just off the boil)

Steps:

  1. Brew the Coffee:
    • Place a paper filter in your Chemex and rinse it with hot water.
    • Add the coffee grounds into the filter and slowly pour hot water over the coffee in a circular motion, wetting the grounds evenly.
    • Let the coffee bloom for about 30 seconds, then continue pouring in a slow, steady stream until you have brewed about 200ml of coffee.
  2. Steam the Milk:
    • Heat the milk to about 60°C, then use a frother or whisk to create smooth, velvety foam.
  3. Combine:
    • Pour the brewed Chemex coffee into your cup.
    • Add the steamed milk, and carefully pour it in to create a smooth blend of coffee and milk with a bit of foam on top.

4. Using a Manual Milk Frother or Aeroccino (Steaming Milk)

If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can still make a great latte by using a manual milk frother or an Aeroccino frother to steam the milk.

Steps:

  1. Brew your coffee using a method such as French press, Chemex, or pour-over (follow the steps above).
  2. While your coffee brews, steam the milk using a frother or Aeroccino. You can heat milk on the stove or in the microwave, then froth it with the tool until it’s silky smooth with microfoam.
  3. Pour the coffee into a cup, then add the frothed milk. You can top it with a little foam and even attempt some simple latte art.

Key Tips for a Perfect Latte:

  • Espresso is Key: The base of your latte should always be a strong, high-quality espresso. If you don’t have an espresso machine, strong brewed coffee can substitute, but espresso brings the signature depth and richness to a latte.
  • Milk Texture: For a great latte, the milk should be steamed to a smooth, velvety texture with small bubbles (microfoam). The milk should not be frothy or foamy like a cappuccino.
  • Proportions: A traditional latte is made up of about 1/3 espresso, 2/3 steamed milk, with just a small amount of foam on top.
  • Experiment: Play around with the milk-to-espresso ratio to find your perfect balance.

With these methods, you can make a delicious latte at home using a variety of equipment—whether you're working with a high-end espresso machine or simpler tools like a French press or Chemex!
