Handpicked with Precision
All our beans are handpicked, meaning they’re selected one by one at peak ripeness. This method is essential for quality: coffee cherries don’t ripen uniformly, so mechanical harvesting often collects underripe or overripe fruit, compromising flavour and consistency.
Handpicking allows farmers to choose only the best cherries, resulting in beans with higher sugar content, stable organic acids, and richer enzymatic profiles — all of which contribute to a more vibrant, balanced cup. It’s a labour-intensive process, often carried out on steep mountain slopes where machinery can’t reach. But it’s worth it — for the farmers, the environment, and your brew.
Paying Above Fairtrade — Because It Matters
At Bold Coffee, we believe farmers deserve more than the minimum. That’s why we pay at least 20–30% above the Fairtrade Minimum Price for our beans — and often more, depending on quality and origin.
As of August 2023, the Fairtrade Minimum Price for washed Arabica beans is £2.98 per kilogram, up from £2.31 — a 29% increase designed to protect farmers from market volatility. In addition, farmers receive a Fairtrade Premium of £0.33 per kilogram, which goes toward community development projects like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Bold Coffee does more, depending on the region and harvest. This means our farmers earn up to 40% more than the Fairtrade baseline, giving them the financial stability to invest in better tools, training, and long-term sustainability.
We work directly with producers to ensure transparency, traceability, and fairness. It’s not just ethical — it’s essential for the future of coffee and the communities who grow it.
